Jae’s Voice: Yui Kanno then and now.

Posted in Jae, Yui Kanno by Jae on January 7, 2011

Does anyone recognise the girl in the image above? XD Of course you do.

It’s Yui-chan! That’s right, this one came from 2008!

I’m not going to be talking about makeup today, cause well, I haven’t done a post like this in a long time and I think it’s healthy that we step back from our makeup once in a while to examine this statement “We all start somewhere” 😀

Yup, Yui didn’t start off as an insanely successful and confident model – in fact, Yui confessed back in 2010 to have had very poor self image (POPTEEN TW, MAY 2010).

In an interview conducted before she left POPTEEN, Yui mentioned that she used to be an introvert who’d rather keep everything inside rather than share it with anyone else because she was afraid of how others would view her.

She did however, bare her soul in an earlier issue of POP, sharing bits of her history with readers. That article had apparently made her feel worried that her fans would no longer be able to accept her because of her self-destructive past.

She never saw herself as pretty or cute either, in fact, in the interview transcript, she mentioned that at first, she didn’t like herself at all and always thought that if she were prettier or cuter, life would be much better.

Her love affair with makeup had purely been due to her hating herself and the way she looked. >_<

She said this “It took me six years to finally stand up and be confident enough to say that I’ve done my best.”

🙂 Shall we look at her now?

In spite of everything in her past and her used-to-be-poor self image, Yui stood up and made it through all that pain through sheer perseverance and hard work.

Yui Kanno is now one of Japan’s most successful models, having graduated from POPTEEN to POPSISTER. She now has a full makeup range under her belt together with countless magazine and fan appearances in a variety of programmes such as the POCKYTV channel showcase and Kumicky’s upcoming Charity Showcase.

Can I say that she looks a lot better now? Not just in terms of how pretty she is but also how her smile’s a lot more natural now.

I don’t know about you, but I suppose some of us can see ourselves in her story. And… The thing is, it took her six years to stand up but you see, she did in the end and we all have to start somewhere.

No one is totally perfect and we all need a little help sometimes and it takes time for us to change things but we have to make that conscious decision to want to do it, to want to change and to want to stick by it.

And on another note? I’m not saying that Yui took the wrong path or anything but… Whatever you feel on the inside really does affect how you look on the outside and even your health in general.

I think I’ve said this before… When we feel depressed or feel like we’re in pain, our bodies release cortisol which is a stress hormone. Now, if there’s one thing I took away from Biology class, it’s that prolonged exposure to cortisol is definitely harmful to our body. It suppressed our immune system, making us especially prone to illnesses and the worst part? It can even decrease the formation of collagen.

Yes, I did say collagen. That’s one of the components that gives you good skin, love… And… Can you imagine? We’re downing pills that contain collagen when really, we already have that in our body and all we had to do was get our stress levels and moods in check, and we’d probably save a lot on those pills and supplements.

🙂 Now, my resolution for this year is to be happy with myself and to try to remember that it will take time for me to get to my goal.

We all start somewhere, beautiful. Let’s keep that in mind, shall we? ❤

You’re right, she’s a gal after all, but she’s outstanding because she still seems to be VERY natural unlike many other gals.

    wow… i didn’t yui was like that!
i mean.. she’s one one of the naturally pretty girls in popteen. how could she think that she wasn’t?!

but i’m glad that she stood up and hey! even though she isn’t powerful like queen tsubasa, at least she holds her own!
she’s got her makeup line that’s just about as successful of even better than tsubasa’s!

i’ve always liked yui for her subtleness… probably also because popteen didn’t sell her out like crazy (which did work more to tsubasa’s advantage than kumikky’s) that it didn’t end up wayyy too commercial for my liking. ^^

    YUI LOVE!!!!

      Hey Bones!!!
      >_< Yes it was quite upsetting… And she certainly does! 😀 Hehe!
I personally think that there just is this special 'Yui touch' to all her makeup products… Love her to death.
      Hehehe, YES YUI LOVE!!!

        i agree with you!

i remember the first popteen i bought was a taiwan edition so it was all fan ti zi but i bought it coz i though that yui (back then i didn’t know her name yet) was really pretty on the cover page!
i actually started buying popteen regularly because i liked her! and her accompanying fellow model – aiku.
i thought both of them complemented each other real good! back then i didn’t like tsubasa coz i didn’t like to tan so i wasn’t into her look. but i did start to like her when i noticed her tan getting lighter. HAHAHAHAHA!

it’s funny, but my bones just don’t look too good with a tan on them.
afterall, i gotta keep my marrow fresh right? *winks*

      >_< -offers a hug- Hehe, chin up, dearie…
We can all work on our confidence levels together! And be like Yui now~! Hehe! I'm hoping that one day, I'll be able to stand up like Yui and say that I did my best too! 😀
